Where does River get its exchange rate for Bitcoin?

We use a variety of sources for the exchange rate including U.S. based exchanges, exchange aggregators, and OTC desks. Each of our liquidity providers can periodically advertise different prices on their respective platforms. We aggregate these prices to derive the River Bitcoin exchange rate.

Because we're a brokerage, when you trade Bitcoin you are buying and selling Bitcoin directly from River. As a result, we charge a small spread to mitigate our price risk due to the volatility of Bitcoin and slippage. This means that the quoted Buy Price or Sell Price might differ from the Bitcoin Price displayed on the chart.
