How do I set up two-factor authentication?

River requires that all clients have two-factor authentication (“2FA”). River currently provides two methods of 2FA to secure your account: time-based one-time passwords or text codes.

Time-based one-time passwords

River recommends time-based one-time passwords (“TOTP”), which add another layer of protection to your account. These do not require phone reception or internet access.

Common TOTP examples include:

  • Google Authenticator

  • Microsoft Authenticator

  • Authy

  • Duo Mobile

  • LastPass Authenticator

SMS or text codes

SMS, also known as text codes, will be enabled in your River account by default. You will receive 6-digit verification codes to the phone number on file with your account. To confirm that SMS is enabled, navigate to your Settings page, where you will see a checkmark next to SMS.

Step 1: Go to "Profile & Settings"

To enable TOTP, login to your River account and navigate to "Profile & Settings." This can be accessed in the bottom left corner of your River homepage.

Step 2: Access Security section

Scroll down to the "Security" and click into "Authentication method."

Step 3: Choose TOTP

Select "Authenticator app (TOTP)" and click "Continue."

Step 4: Verify SMS

You will be sent a PIN via text message (SMS) to the mobile phone number associated with your River account. When prompted, enter the PIN on the screen to verify the TOTP activation request.

Step 5: Link TOTP

Scan the QR code with your TOTP app of choice and enter the one-time password.

Step 6: TOTP Active

You're all set! You should now see a checkmark next to TOTP.
