Article Summary
This article explains River's two-factor authentication options — SMS and authenticator apps — and how to change your method.
River requires that all clients have two-factor authentication (2FA). River currently provides two options for two-factor authentication to secure your account: text-based verification (SMS codes), or authenticator app (TOTP).
If you would like to recover your existing two-factor authentication method, please see this Help Center article.
Text-based verification (SMS)
The default method for authenticating your River account is text-based verification, in which you receive codes to the phone number on file. To confirm that SMS is enabled, navigate to your "Profile & Settings," where you will see "Text-based verification" selected.
If you are using the River app, you can tap your profile icon on the upper left corner of the homepage, then tap "Security & Privacy." You can tap "Two-factor authentication" to view your authentication method.
Authenticator app
River recommends using a third-party authenticator app (TOTP), which adds another layer of protection to your account. These do not require phone reception or internet access. Instead of receiving a code to your number on file, you will receive temporary codes on your authenticator app.
Common authenticator apps include:
- Google Authenticator
- Microsoft Authenticator
- Twilio Authy
- Duo Mobile
- LastPass Authenticator
Please note that River does not endorse or promote any of the third-party authenticator apps listed above. We encourage you to review and select the option that best fits your needs.
Please also note that changing your two-factor authentication method initiates a temporary protection period that disables bitcoin sends, creation of new River Links, and editing or creating automatic withdrawals.
You can adjust your two-factor authentication method within your "Profile & Settings" on river.com and the River app. If you have lost access to your authentication method, please contact Client Services.
