This article explains how to download River's activity CSVs, understand each column, and import data into tax software like Koinly and CoinTracker.
You can download either your bitcoin activity or your account activity as CSV files.
Your bitcoin activity CSV contains all completed bitcoin transactions on your account. Your account activity CSV contains a complete record of all bitcoin and cash transactions.
After downloading, you can import your River CSV files into a tax or performance tracking software.
Please note that you can only download account activity from a web browser and not directly from the mobile app.
Step 1: Click "Taxes & Documents"
From river.com, click "Taxes & Documents" on the left side of the homepage.
Step 2: Generate CSV
On the right side of the screen, you will see two drop-down boxes, one drop-down for the type of report you would like to generate and the other drop-down for the time period. After making your selections, click "Generate."
Please note that your CSV download will take a few moments to generate. Do not refresh the page until the download is complete.
Step 3: CSV downloaded
Once your CSV has been generated, your file will be saved to your computer's downloads folder.
How do I understand my CSV files?
Bitcoin Activity CSV
| Column Title | Description |
| Date | The date and time of the transaction in Coordinated Universal Time. |
| Sent Amount | The amount of bitcoin or cash that was deducted from your account, not including any fees. |
| Sent Currency |
The currency type of the "Sent Amount." This would be either BTC or USD. For a bitcoin buy, the sent currency would be USD, as cash left your bank account in exchange for bitcoin. |
| Received Amount |
The amount of bitcoin or cash that was deposited into your River account, not including fees. For a bitcoin buy, the received amount would be the amount of exchanged bitcoin. |
| Received Currency |
The currency of the "Received Amount." This would be either BTC or USD. For a bitcoin buy, the currency would be BTC, as bitcoin entered your River account in exchange for cash. |
| Fee Amount | The amount that was paid in fees for the transaction. |
| Fee Currency | The currency of the fee paid for the transaction. This would be either BTC or USD. |

Please note that cost basis information will be limited in the Account Activity CSV if there are unknown lots for any deposited bitcoin into your River account.

How do I import my downloaded CSV files into a tax tracking software?
To track your transactions for tax and performance purposes, you can import your generated CSV files to common software with minimal effort.
Below are common software options and steps to format your River data. You may need to copy it into the software's template or edit the River file directly.

- Repurpose the data in the "Tag" column into Koinly's "Label" column.
- Remove "Buy," "Sell," and any other tags not supported by Koinly.

Change order of columns.
- Received columns should go before Sent columns.
- Rename "Received Amount" to "Received Quantity."
- Rename "Sent Amount" to "Sent Quantity."
- Remove "Buy" and "Sell" tags and any others that are not accepted by CoinTracker.

Add the fee amount to the received or sent amounts depending on transaction type. River file does not include fees into the Received and Sent values but CoinTracker expects fees to be included. The fee will be the same currency as the value you need to add it to.
